Hyrst is an Old English term meaning a wooded hill, hillock, thicket or grove. It is a common, archaic element found in British place names designating a wooded elevation or a settlement located near a wood.

These designs represent the twisting branches and trunks of the trees in my woodland, the pattern emphasising the form. Using the branches themselves to mould the clay I then hand build allowing the form to emerge. The lined pattern is a symbol of the wood grain, representing growth.
